After his heated rap feud with Eminem last year, Machine Gun Kelly returns with new music hinting at his next album project. In an interview with Zane Lowe, MGK told that he envisions his “next project to be all singing.” We can see that he means it in the new song “why are you here.” Check out the lyrics and meaning behind this song.
In the same interview with Zane Lowe, Machine Gun Kelly revealed the inspiration behind this song; “I walked into a party one time with this girl that I guess I was kinda creepin’ with while I was talking to this other girl, and I walked in and the other girl that I was lying to was in the party and she was lying to me. So I was there with somebody and she was there with somebody. And I didn’t really know I would be affected by it until I saw it with my own eyes.”
“why are you here” describes an awkward encounter with an ex-girlfriend at a party and they hook up against their best judgements. This triggers many unresolved emotions between them.

Chorus
These lyrics of the song describe the theme which is based on real-life events as revealed by MGK. He reflects back to the party from the night before where he met his ex-girlfriend unexpectedly. He was with a girl and she was with a guy. Booze might have played a part in their decision to have a fling in the bathroom just after midnight.
MGK questions ‘why she was there’ too at this party? This led them hooking up against their best judgement and now there are so many unresolved issues surfaced. And they don’t think they can remain friends in these circumstances.
Verse 1
In the first verse of the song, MGK confesses that he still cannot control himself around this ex-girlfriend. This led to them getting physical on the bathroom floor at the party. They are both insane for committing this ‘crime.’ But neither of them can be helped.
Pre-chorus
In these lyrics, MGK describes the abrupt sexual encounter he had with his ex. He insisted that they leave the lights on in the bathroom so they can witness each others carnal shame in their eyes. MGK the nice guy helps her put her clothes back on after sex. This line shows that this encounter was not just another fling. He still has residual feelings for this girl.
Verse 2
In the second verse of the song, MGK explains the feelings he endured seeing his ex at this party. He felt sick inside seeing her with another man. Neither of them gathered any courage to speak to each other, but their body language spoke plenty.
Bridge
In the bridge of “why are you here,” MGK reiterates a conversation with his ex. Apparently they both lied to each other about their whereabouts and their relationship status.
If their relationship, whatever was left of it, was messed up before, now things are worse. They will likely keep on playing this game until they get fed up of each other and the rollercoaster of emotions in each turn.
