The world under the Coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown is starting to take different forms than ordinary days. We see this when The 1975 sings about falling in love with a girl he finds online! Any other day, we would expect this to happen at a bar or a club or party. But meeting a girl online is relatable to the current world right now. Let’s take a look at the brand new track “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)” by The 1975.
The new song “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)” is part of The 1975’s upcoming fourth studio album ‘Notes on a Conditional Form’ expected to release in May 2020. Previous releases from this album include “Frail State of Mind,” “The Birthday Party,” “The Me & You Together Song,” and “People.”
The song is about falling in love with a girl the singer finds online. But it seems to be that he cannot have her. Little context is given as to who she is or what she does. But by the sounds of it, she seems to be like a cam-girl?

“If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)” Lyrics Review and Song Meaning
Annie Mac, in an interview with BBC Radio, questioned what the song means from The 1975 vocalist Matt Healy. He responded; “it’s about chasing connection. It’s about getting naked on FaceTime. It’s a lighter version of the observations of what we are all up to on the Internet.”
So Matty and this online girl are talking to each other on a video call. She is going on about something rough in her life and he is just staring at her. He tries hard not to stare “down there” which is definitely a sexual reference. He cannot even comprehend how to behave with her. For one, she is the girl of his dreams. But also he so badly wants to get physical with her, but is also scared to be upfront about it.
Matt Healy finds himself at a hotel and calling “twins” to meet him. A possible reference to two prostitutes? Despite that, he also realizes that he has to get back home as soon as possible to catch his online girl live. Matty cannot get into the hotel because it’s too early in the morning. So even though Matt is messing around with other girls, he is still falling hard for his online girl.
This time when they meet online, this girl has a request for her: get naked for her! This is the twist of the plot in this song. It is actually Matt who is shy to get raunchy with her online. The fact that she is quite forward about this and that she is not shy to get naked suggests that she might be a cam-girl. She asks him to “stop thinking” about it and get naked.
In the second verse, we learn more about their online relationship. Matty says that he has not been wearing any clothes every time he calls her. This could be metaphorical, given that now he is actually shy to do so when asked. Maybe he was mentally undressed and ready to go when calling her. Now that there is an actual request to get naked in front of her, he is uncomfortable.
In the second pre-chorus, too, Matty is at another hotel which he cannot get in to. There has been a murder apparently at the hotel. So he might not call his “twins” to the hotel this time. But he will definitely get back to his computer to see her girl live.
“If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)” is a fun song about the adventures of the 21st Century on the Internet. The story might not be entirely fictional. Let us hear what you think about this new song by The 1975 in the comments below.
