The Chainsmokers Premier “Side Effects” Featuring Emily Warren (Lyrics Review)

We love writing about millennial relationships, for better or worse. [Laughs.] But we write about what we observe, and we write about making bad decisions often, as you’ll hear in the song. But also kind of being impulsive in getting into them, and also living in the moment, as we find beauty in those small moments. The Chainsmokers are gearing up for the reveal and release of their next studio album ‘Sick Boy.’ To this end, we have a new single and a music video by the DJ duo Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. “Side Effects” is an upbeat track with a catchy hook and a music video.

The new single “Side Effects” features vocals by Emily Warren. The Chainsmokers has also cast the ‘Riverdale’ TV show star Camila Mendes in the music video. She plays the role of Veronica Lodge on the TV show.

So far, in 2018, The Chainsmokers has released “Sick Boy,” “You Owe Me,” “Everybody Hates Me” and “Somebody,” all possibly from the upcoming album. The Chainsmokers caught the attention of the world with their singles “Closer” and “Don’t Let Me Down” and “All We Know” from their 2016 mixtape ‘Collage.’ Their unique sense of electronic music made their music stand out from the rest. However, “Side Effects” is more R&B and Pop than Electronic.

“Side Effects” music video is directed by Matthew Dillon Cohen.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Side Effects”

The lyrics to the song are plain and simple, much like most of The Chainsmokers’ songs.

The Chainsmokers talked about the new song with Billboard:

“We love writing about millennial relationships, for better or worse. But we write about what we observe, and we write about making bad decisions often, as you’ll hear in the song. But also kind of being impulsive in getting into them, and also living in the moment, as we find beauty in those small moments.” – Andrew Taggart via Billboard

The first verse talks how this girl is feeling quite alone and left out in this job and she needs a change of scenery. But, the change of scenery is the guy she has a crush on. She does not seem to be ready to confront her feelings for this guy, so she just dances away in the night.

She has a craving for this guy, which she calls a ‘side effect’ of her being alone.

The singer seems to be fed up with all the restrictions and rules. She wants to loosen up and make some bad decisions over some alcohol. But everything leads her to this guy.

“But ooh, if late night friends
Have consequences, cool”

The bridge of the song talks about the dilemma of the singer’s situation. This is not the first time that she has been infatuated with a guy and got her heart broken. She usually draws a line where she takes a relationship. But, right now, she is out of options and lines to draw. She just needs him so much.
