Miley Cyrus – Unholy (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“Unholy” is the second track on Miley Cyrus’s brand new EP ‘She Is Coming‘ premiered on May 31, 2019. This is the shortest track on the 6-track album, and talks about being human.

Miley Cyrus teased her upcoming ‘She Is Coming’ EP several weeks back and performed two tracks “Cattitude” and “Mother’s Daughter” live on BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend during the last week of May 2019. The pop star also revealed that ‘She Is Coming’ EP is the first part of an album trilogy, followed by ‘She Is Here’ and ‘She Is Everything,’ which will set the backdrop to her upcoming 7th studio album.

Produced by John Cunningham, “Unholy” takes on the theme of being ill with the human condition. Miley Cyrus confesses to be drunk on alcohol, high on weed, her desire for unconventional sex and so on, which she believes everyone is guilty of. The fact of the matter is most people hide it well.

Miley Cyrus has never shied away from showing her true self to the public. Her 2014 ‘Bangerz Tour’ sparked much controversy for her sexually aggressive outfits and performances. Her 2015 concert that followed ‘Milky Milky Milk Tour’ was not a step back from her usual self despite the massive backlash.

In the only verse of the song, Miley Cyrus brings up a good point to prove that she is not the only one. Yes, the whole of media calls Miley ‘obscene’ for her crude behaviour, especially during the ‘Bangerz’ and ‘Milky Milky Milk’ tours. However, there is a viral video of the crowd trying to ‘grope‘ Miley Cyrus during one of these concerts. So it’s not just her. She just expresses herself more openly and freely. We could call this behaviour ‘unholy’ as something that would fall in the brackets of being frowned upon by religion.
