“Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy)” is the fourteenth track on The 1975’s 2020 album ‘Notes on a Conditional Form.’ The song has the singer searching for love and hoping that he earns it from the person he wants it from. However, much like any The 1975 song, there is much more embedded within the lyrics.
The 1975 released their fourth studio album ‘Notes on a Conditional Form’ on May 22, 2020. Prior to the release of the album we saw several singles come out such as “Me & You Together Song,” “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know),” “The Birthday Party” and more. These gave an indication that this album is all about the human condition.
Matt Healy, the frontman of The 1975 spoke about this song with Apple Music; “This is the anomaly on the record for me. I don’t know where it came from.” He adds; “it reminds me of all the kind of proper Pop music that I grew up listening to, like Backstreet Boys. And it’s like an ode to early Max Martin, late ’90’s pop.”

The song’s intro is a sample of “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)” by The Temptations. These lyrics, too, run along the same theme of the song by The 1975.
In the first verse of the song, Matt Healy talks about his constant struggle to win this love as well as try and contain his disappointments being unable to achieve it. He often checks with himself if he still wants this. He tries to convince himself otherwise. But heart wants what the heart wants!
The pre-chorus lets us know that this relationship is not working out not due to a lack of trying from Matt Healy. He speaks to this girl and asks her why they are not in this together! There’s no answer to this question. Matty resolves to believe that this may just not be their time still.
In the chorus, we hear Matty regretting something quite seriously. He believes he effed it royally. What did he do? Maybe he pushed her too hard? Maybe he proposed her? Whichever he did, the response from the girl was a hard negative.
In the second verse of “Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy),” we hear the singer running away from his failure. And he also lets our some potential reasons into this relationship not working out–his name, his voice, and his fame? Dating a celebrity cannot be easy. But it sounds like she has given up on him even before giving him a chance.
The bridge of the song may give a hint into what happened on this dreadful night. The scene replays on his mind and he is contemplating running away from this life. It sounds like he has experienced some kind of a rejection. Maybe he proposed to this girl? Whatever happened, Matty believes that even the slightest window they had before is completely shut after his actions tonight.
