“Tightrope” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review
In the song, Zayn describes his relationship as walking a tightrope. A tightrope is usually a strong wire suspended high in the air and a person walks across it as an act of extreme balancing. It is a literal life-and-death act, which only trained professionals attempt. A relationship should be nothing closer to such a feeling.
Zayn feels an impending fall in his relationship with his significant other. And he also gets the feeling that they are not doing anything about it; “Why you wanna see how far I fall?”
The stronger you hold on in a relationship, the harder you fall, if it does ever comes to it.
Does Zayn want to let the grip go? He asks his partner if they are ready for the freefall? Life on a tightrope is stressful and Zayn is not about that life.
However, the lyrical transition in the pre-chorus to the chorus and the second verse, suggests that Zayn is singing about two people. He is falling from a tightrope into the arms of another; “Something told me it was you.” Zayn cleverly uses the metaphor of “falling” to sing about two entirely different circumstances in a relationship: falling in love and falling out of love.
The bridge of the song, sung in Urdu, translates to;
Are you the full moon or the sun?
Whatever you are, I swear to God, you are beyond compare
Zayn could be tributing his current partner Gigi Hadid when he says she is The One!
