The Weeknd is back with new music but keeping true to the “Blinding Lights” style he had adopted a few years back. “Dancing In The Flames” speaks about a passionate love that endures all kinds of hardships.
“Dancing In The Flames” is the lead single from The Weeknd’s upcoming sixth studio album ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow.’ This track and other tracks from the same album were previewed during Abel’s one-night performance in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 7, 2024.
During the Apple event of September 2024, it was revealed that the music video for “Dancing In The Flames” was entirely shot on the new Apple iPhone 16 Pro with its advanced camera technology.
The song captures feelings of turmoil when things don’t go their way in a relationship. Abel paints a picture of two people in love from a distance and how they sometimes would do reckless things to be together — even though these acts could harm them severely.

The Weeknd “Dancing In The Flames” Lyrics Review and Song Meaning
The Weeknd paints an image of a person in a car racing home at night. The whole world has gone to their destinations and he is speeding to his. The traffic lights are a blur and his car light is the only thing ahead of him. His mind is in a different place – home – be it physical or metaphorical.
I hope we make it, ’cause I’ve been chasin’
Another odyssey, oh
The Weeknd has been talking about ending The Weeknd – the stage name. He wants to give birth to his new moniker and thus a new phase of his career – Abel Testafaye – his real name. He is ready to be who he is and show the world what he is truly made out of. This album will likely be the last album with his stage name ‘The Weeknd.’
In the hook of the song, The Weeknd says that he cannot wait to get home and he is willing to risk certain things to get there. ‘Switching lanes’ while driving is a risky maneuver. Especially if you’re speeding while doing so. But this is the feeling of longing that makes him take a risk to get to the destination soon. In the context of his career, ‘switching lanes’ is him hinting at the next phase to come under a new moniker. It is a risky move as he has worked so hard to build his current stage name ‘The Weeknd.’ With the change in names comes changes to music style as well and there is always a risk of losing a certain fan base due to this.
In the bridge of the song, The Weeknd claims that it has been a tiring journey so far and he barely made it this far. But he is here and the next chapter excites him. He can almost see his partner’s beautiful face waiting for him at their home. Likewise, he can almost feel that this new chapter in his career is going to be something beautiful.
But if I miss the brake
We’re dancin’ in the flames
If a driver misses the brakes at a crucial time it could lead to disaster; even costing their life. While speeding home and switching lanes while doing so if the driver misses a brake it could almost definitely mean catastrophe for the driver and others. Changing something in a well-established career also could feel like missing the brakes of a moving vehicle. It could be a hit or miss. If it is a miss, Abel will be dancing in the flames – the best out of a worst situation.
