Billie Eilish – lovely Ft. Khalid (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

Billie Eilish and Khalid combine their soulful voices in this single titled “lovely.” The song is rumoured to make it into Billie’s debut studio album expected in 2019. However, the song made it into the official soundtrack of Netflix’s ’13 Reasons Why’ Season 2 TV series. The same soundtrack included hit songs such as “Back to You” by Selena Gomez, “Start Again” by OneRepublic and “The Night We Met” by Lord Huron.

“lovely” was first premiered on April 19, 2018, on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio network. Since then, the song has gained quite the reputation courtesy of this amazing vocal collaboration. Speaking with Zane Lowe, Billie said the following about the song;

“We called it (“lovely”) because the song was sort of really freaking depressing so then it’s like oh, how lovely. Just taking everything horrible like you know what this is great. I’m so happy being miserable.”

Billie Eilish has been very successful in her very short career in music with massive hits such as “when the party’s over,” “idontwannabeyouanymore” and “WHEN I WAS OLDER.” Her upcoming debut album, whenever it is due, is going to make some serious ripples in the music industry.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “lovely”

Verse 1

Billie Eilish and Khalid start off with their experiences on depression. Just when you thought you have gotten rid of depression, it sneaks back in. They may have tried countless things to fight it, but it still keeps creeping in. In the end Billie and Khalid, both resort to living with it.

While talking about “idontwannabeyouanymore” song, Billie said; “Even though I have a great life with many wonderful things in it, I have still dealt with depression.”

Pre-chorus

Billie and Khalid, both, are determined to cure themselves of these depressive feelings. Even if it takes a hundred years, they are not going to stop fight it.

‘Depression’ would make you feel like you need to be away from everyone-hide from the world. But in their status of celebrity, it should be quite difficult to have privacy in the outside world. This only adds to depression.

Chorus

The first line of the chorus is a sarcastic remark, as she explained previously. It’s as if ‘depression’ has become such a frequent thing, Billie would be quite accustomed to it by now. She will be like “oh, lovely, here’s depression, again!.”

Something made out of glass is usually known to be very fragile. So, it must be quite bad having a softer heart and depressive thoughts at the same time. As a result, grows a mind that is stone-unbreakable and strong.

Feeling like being torn apart to pieces from head-to-toe now feels like home to Billie Eilish. In “idontwannabeyouanymore,” Billie talked about how she would suffere anxiety attacks quite frequently.

Verse 2

In the second verse of “lovely,” Billie Eilish joins Khalid to drop some more experiences on depression. They talk about how they feels as if they are running out of time, without actually seeing any progression. Those thoughts on their heads always linger on and disturb them. Their search for a ‘better place’ seems far fetched now.

Pre-chorus 2

In the second pre-chorus Billie and Khalid change one line from the previous pre-chorus, and it gives us a whole lot of hope. Rather than saying “Oh, I hope some day I’ll make it out of here,” in this second pre-chorus, the singers say “But I know someday I’ll make it out of here.” So at least the song ends on a more positive note than the rest of the song.
