Once one of Pop music’s favorite singers, Hilary Duff is so back with a brand new album titled ‘luck… or something.’ While the entire album is complete with personal inspirations from Duff’s life, the song “We Don’t Talk” screams out a little louder as it talks about the rift between Hilarry and her sister Haylie Duff.
‘Luck… or something’ is Hilary Duff’s sixth studio album and her comeback to music after 11 years. Her last project was ‘Breathe In. Breathe Out’ from 2015. The new album comes under her new music label, Atlantic Records. Hilary released two singles from the album, namely “Mature” and “Roommates,” in November 2025 and January 2026, respectively. The inspiration behind the album comes from decades of experience in the entertainment industry for Hilary Duff. “This album feels like a great representation of the past 10, almost 20 years. It’s a journey in being okay with yourself, your story, and the winding road that got you there,” said Duff on her X account.
Haylie Duff and Hilary Duff are seemingly not on good terms, according to the song “We Don’t Talk,” and as evidenced by the lack of sightings of them together in public. According to sources, the estrangement might have heightened around 2019.

Who is Hilary Duff talking about in the song “We Don’t Talk”?
In the first verse of the song, Hilary Duff talks about falling out with a person who has been near and dear to her. By the sound of things, we are not getting any clear answers from her either, as she says she is not exactly sure what happened between them to be this way now. She can only run through the memory lane and put pieces together of what might have happened. And would this person still be in her life if she had done things differently? Or were they always going to part their ways?
‘Cause we come from the same home, the same blood
A different combination, but the same lock
These lyrics from the pre-chorus suggest that Hilary Duff is talking about her sister Haylie Duff. The latter is also an American singer and an actress, much like her younger sister Hilary Duff. Although they come from the same home and parents, they are strangers now through a mysterious chain of events. Hilary misses her sister – how close they used to be. They used to share everything with each other. Not anymore.

In the catchy hook of the song, Hilary Duff laments about how there is zero communication between them when there was a time they were inseparable. How did their relationship erode so badly?
In the second verse of the song, Hilary Duff assumes their rift is due to emotions. She can’t help but wonder if it’s jealousy. Saying this out loud in a song for the world to hear would not likely help them reconnect and patch things up. There are many criteria for someone to be jealous of another – financial, relationships, popularity, and appearance being a few of them.
God knows I would sell it all, then break you off the bigger half
However, with the above line, Hilary Duff brings it back. She says she would sacrifice anything she has to have her sister back in her life. This is a massive olive branch if we’ve ever seen one. They are not on a talking basis anymore, so she puts her communication in a song, which is sure to reach Haylie’s ears.
In the bridge of the song, Hilary Duff proposes they sit down on a couch side-by-side and talk things out, like they used to do when they were kids. This entire song is Hilary Duff confessing how bad she misses her sister and how she would do anything to patch up their relationship. Let us all root for a happy ending for them.
