Taylor Swift 1989 Swiftstakes

Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ Reaches 1.287 Million First Week Sales, Sets a New World Record, But Falls Shy of Britney Spears’s ‘Oops’

Highest First Week Sales in 12 Years

So the official figures have rolled in and Taylor is the proud owner of a new world record–not the one we were all excited about, but maybe even a better one. Taylor Swift aimed for highest first week sales of an album in the music history, or at least by a female artist. The current record for highest first week sales by a female artist is held by Britney Spears herself for her album ‘Oops…I Did It Again’ which was released back in 2000, which sold 1.319 million copies. Taylor Swift’s new album sold 1.287 million copies in the first week.

The playground for music has changed a lot comparing 2000 and 2014. The album sales have fallen a staggering 14% throughout the years and having achieved 1.287 million sales in the first week is a massive feet. If you just casually adjust for the drop in album sales of 14%, Taylor Swift’s ‘1989‘ would have sold roughly 1.467 million copies. *wink*wink*

Anyway ‘1989’ first week sales of 1.287 million is the first album in 2014 to sell over a million copies. Not even Coldplay’s ‘Ghost Stories’ came anywhere close to this mark. This achievement takes Taylor to the hall of fame of only 18 artists in the history to achieve 1 million + album sales in the first week.

The World Record!!!

Let’s talk about the new world record she set. Believe it or not, Taylor just passed a record held by The Beatles. ‘1989’ is Taylor’s third consecutive album to sell over a million copies in the opening week. Speak Now (2010) and RED (2012) both sold over a million copies in the first week of sales. This makes Taylor Swift the ONLY artist in the history of music to have 3 albums with 1 million+  first week sales. Pretty impressive huh?

‘1989’ sales were predicted to be around 600K by market analysts. After a few days of the release they predicted it to be somewhere around 700K and after another few days they predicted it to be 1 million and the final sales figure has blown them all away.

The various tactics Taylor used to sell the album must have helped her achieve this tremendous feet. Either way a big Congratulations to Taylor Swift on achieving this immense accolade.

While we celebrate Taylor’s achievement, this is how Taylor Swift reacted to the news. Taylor Swift perfectly rapped (lip synced) Kendrick Lamar‘s “Backseat Freestyle”… Watch the video below.

Seriously, what can’t she do? *_*
