Olivia Rodrigo – happier | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

“happier” is the eighth track on Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 album ‘Sour.’ The song is almost a follow-up for the sixth track on the album, “good 4 u,” where she wishes her ex-boyfriend goodluck for he has moved on so fast with another girl. In this song, too, Olivia sings that although it breaks her heart to see that he is happy with another girl, she only hopes that he is not happier with her.

Olivia Rodrigo announced her debut studio album ‘Sour‘ following the massive success she gained with her debut single “driver’s license.” She followed up this success with another single “deja vu.” Announcing the new album, she commented “alsoooooo i f*cked around and made an album. i’m so proud of it.”

In the song, Olivia describes how awkward it get when you date a guy from a group of friends such as the cast of ‘Highschool Musical: The Musical: The Series,’ for example. You two have so many mutual friends and everybody meets and everybody talks. Moving on is really hard when you two constantly bump on to each other. But he did it somehow, and made it look easier. This breaks Olivia.

“happier” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

In “happier” we find an angrier Olivia Rodrigo. She is heartbroken over the fact that she was lied to and betrayed by her ex-boyfriend. She remembers when he said that she was the most beautiful girl he had seen. Olivia suspects that he will be saying the same thing to his new girl now. Olivia now has no problem believing that ‘eternal love’ is nothing but a fantasy.

Olivia Rodrigo sings that it has been a hard one month having broken up with him. She is still processing this thought. But he has already moved on with a prettier, blondier, and taller girl. She is everything Olivia hopes to be.

Olivia is still in mourning. Her ex-boyfriend is having the time of his life with the new girl. Olivia can only hope that he is not happier with the new girl than he was with her. This might be a lie that she has to tell herself to cope up with everything.
