What’s the meaning of “Opening Night” by Arctic Monkeys?
The beginning of the song appears to address modern society as a whole. The first seems to discuss technology and how humanity has become increasingly dependent on it, often leading to negative consequences such as a lack of social interaction, reduced cognitive usage, a numbing of creativity, and a plethora of psychological issues.
Popular slogans and a bucket of pain
Arctic Monkeys could be referring to the fact that social media is filled with words of wisdom, lyrics, quotes, and guides that tend to attract and trap users. With the invention of AI for the public, we have seen a flood of videos and text on every topic on this planet, which are all part of the artificial stimulation of the brain to no end.
Stealing your thunder, washing your brain
Arctic Monkeys direct their attention to mobile phones that have successfully engulfed the human race in just 20 years. Everyone has a mobile phone that is hooked up to the Internet now, and we get an unlimited stream of content through it. We have never needed anyone else to keep us company as long as we have a charged mobile phone with a good Internet connection. This has, inevitably, turned us into introverts and lacking social empathy. It has also given a lot of us a false sense of security that our actions through a mobile device will not somehow carry consequences.
Many studies have shown that our brains go into overdrive when we doom-scroll social media. This nonstop dopamine rush is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing to our brains. It gets no relaxation and does more damage in the long run.
You’re a lonely little hall of famer
Even if you are a massive influencer on social media with millions in following, you are still a lonely human being outside of the social media platforms. Social media often gives us a false sense of reality and security. This disassociation from reality can be quite damaging.
The chorus of the song changes gears a bit. He says that the current climate of society is unbalanced. There is something in the air that doesn’t quite seem right. Maybe it’s the ever-rising mental health challenges, maybe it’s the unstable global political and economic climate, or maybe it’s just the uncertainty of things. Whatever it is, the singer can see it on your face, on their face, and in everyone else he sees. Disguised underneath our smiles are something far gloomier, and maybe none of us even know it is there.
In the bridge of the song, Arctic Monkeys connect the title of the song to the rest of the lyrics.
Please, don’t fall in love with everything on opening night
The singer talks about how social media can show us a completely different picture than what actually goes on behind the scenes. This could be a completely alternative reality to what we see on the highlight reels. So, the singer’s one request is not to fall in love with the ‘opening night.’ An ‘opening night’ of any event is usually the most flamboyant and extravagant night. The hype almost dies to nothingness on the following day. The singer asks everyone to be aware that social media may feel like an ‘opening night’ every night. But most of it is overly exaggerated with ungrounded victories that do not compare to one’s everyday life. Keep yourself aware and awake. ‘Sleeping dogs’ are good for business.
