American singer-songwriter Mitski Miyawaki, professionally known as Mitski, just released a brand new lead single from her upcoming studio album. Titled “Where’s My Phone,” the song is an emotional rollercoaster that does not come to a halt.
“Where’s My Phone” is the lead single from Mitski’s eighth studio album ‘Nothing’s About to Happen to Me,’ expected to be released in February 2026. According to the press releases, this album “finds Mitski immersing herself in a rich narrative whose main character is a reclusive woman in an unkempt house. Outside of her home, she is a deviant; inside of her home, she is free.” The brand new song is a perfect intro to this theme.
“Where’s My Phone” was released along with a music video that befits the theme of the song and the album. This cinematic piece is full of chaotic energy from the start to the end.

Mistki “Where’s My Phone” Lyrics Review and Song Meaning
Mitski kicks off the song with the hook: a chaotic woman looking for a lost treasure – her phone. Almost all of us have misplaced our phones at one point or another. The sheer chill of fear a misplaced phone sends through our body and soul is quite embarrassing. How have we evolved into treasuring a piece of equipment with so much emotion? Is it the fact that our entire connection to the outside world lives in the phone? Is it the fact that we have sensitive data on the phone that we don’t want anyone else to see? Whichever it is, it has become quite normal for us feel quite anxious and petrified in the act of misplacing our phones. The singer is no different here, to the point that she is questioning, ‘Where has she gone?’ without her phone. Her self-identity is largely attached to/portrayed through her phone.
A woman always on the street called me a ditch
“A ditch on my block,” she said
The start of the first verse does not let the listener off the grip. Mitski dives right into yet another emotional turmoil she faces on a daily basis. ‘A woman always on the street’ could have several meanings – most prominent among them being that she is a prostitute or someone who has nothing better to do than waste time judging other people. Why would this woman call Mitski a ‘ditch’? A much more likely word would have been the ‘b’ word, but Mitski’s brain possibly sheltered her from it. A ditch, on the literal side, could symbolize an obstacle – one it Mitski’s head.
Then, Mitski tells us that she just wants a clear head. This feels like a big ask in this day and age. We have trained our brains to overdose on pleasures and distractions. The mobile phone being a primary enabler of pleasures and distractions in the modern world, Mitski’s ask feels almost too much, especially considering how frantic she was a second ago looking for her phone. A head without thoughts is Zen – not empty.
Mitski believes that somebody will save her. What does she think she needs saving from? Her own self? Why is she seeking help outside? Maybe she does not believe that she can help herself. Or it is easier to hope for someone else’s help than mustering the courage and doing what needs to be done to save herself.
If night is like you punched a hole into tomorrow
This is a very interesting string of words by Mitski. She is toying with the idea that a certain person has her longing for more human connection with them. ‘A hole into tomorrow’ sounds like a shortcut to the future – almost as if to say that she is very much looking to the future with this person. Mitski follows up this line with a strong sexual subtext. These lines together hint at a strong desire by the singer for companionship and possibly hoping that the same person would be her savior from the mundane.
Yet again, we find Mitski wishing for a clear head. Her desire is strong to free herself from the clutter of the modern world. We also know that Mitski really does not believe that this is doable. She compares having a clear mind to a bug floating in melted amber. While this sounds poetic, it also means that the bug is fully well dead in amber. There are no bugs that swim in melted amber – only those who get trapped and mummified in the resin for ages. Is Mitski asking for the morbid? Is a clear head only possible in the eternal bliss?
Maybe we all need our phones to survive.
