“Dying for You” is the third track on Charli XCX’s brand new album ‘Wutherin Heights.’ The song describes a torturous relationship in which the singer yearns for a deeper, stronger bond.
“Chains Of Love” was released as the second single from Charli XCX’s contribution to the soundtrack of the movie ‘Wutherin Heights,’ from 2026. “In early December 2024, I got a text from an unknown number that turned out to be Emerald Fennell,” said Charli XCX about hearing from the director of the ‘Wuthering Heights’ movie.
“I began to sink into this reimagined world of Wuthering Heights and I suddenly began to feel… inspired. I was immersing myself in a story that was not my own, a story that was steeped in history, a story that had existed since 1847 (tysm Emily Brontë),” revealed Charli XCX on creating not one song, but an entire album for the movie soundtrack.
The song “Dying for You,” is likely inspired by the story of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff from Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.’ In the novel, the two share an intense, destructive, yet inseparable love stemming from a source of similar tragic upbringing. In the song, Cathy comes to the realization that all the pain she went through in love has all been an expression of her deep connection with Heathcliff.

What is the meaning of “Dying for You” by Charli XCX?
At the beginning of the song, the singer confesses that she felt it in her bones that she was destined for torture.
A tragic destiny was reserved for me all on my own
Maybe she did not fully understand what she was getting into. But when she saw him, she knew she was in it until the end. She compares his affection for her as both strong and toxic. It is a gun to her head or a wound in her chest that aches with every breath.
Yeah, you’re my favourite jewellery, worn just like a noose ’round my neck
Jewelry is deemed valuable – an ornament that females adore. It adds value and shows off status. The singer says he is her favorite piece of jewelry that she wears. But she also immediately flips it around to say that the jewelry is worn around her neck like a noose. This line clearly demonstrates the nature of Cathy and Heathcliff’s relationship – both loving and hurtful.
I got a smile on my face, I bleed even more
In the novel, Cathy gets married off to a wealthy neighbour to preserve her social status. She forces a smile through her marriage, and it kills her inside every time.
I was dying for you, I was dying for you
I’ll keep dying for you, I’ll keep dying for you
It is quite tragic when two lovers who are strongly bonded are forced to part their ways in love. Cathy knows that she would do anything for Heathcliff. She never stopped yearning for him, even after she got married off to someone else. In her heart, she is still with the one she loves.
‘Cause you’re the poison I drink, I drink you twice to be sure
The singer confesses that the more in love she is with this person, the more poison she injects into her system. She knows that she will not end up with the man she loves. So, the deeper she loves him, the stronger the poison becomes. Cathy is going to live as if she were dead in a marriage she is forced into.
Even more tragic is that the singer is happy to commit to this life of pain and torture in the name of love.
