The lyrics to the song are quite heartbreaking as is the theme of the song. The lyrics are quite straightforward. Here is our lyrics review and song meaning.

Verse 1

Why did you leave me here to burn?
I’m way too young to be this hurt
I feel doomed in hotel rooms
Staring straight up at the wall
Counting wounds and I am trying to numb them all

Camila Cabello is heartbroken after a devastating breakup. She was young and naive and now she is left with sorrows. Her world feels shattered and she is trying different things to numb her pain.

Pre-chorus

Do you care, do you care?
Why don’t you care?
I gave you all of me
My blood, my sweat, my heart, and my tears
Why don’t you care, why don’t you care?
I was there, I was there, when no one was
Now you’re gone and I’m here

The singer cannot believe the outcome of her relationship, because she was there for him when no one was. She was trustworthy and caring. She has so many unanswered questions which makes her doubt everything-all the years she had with him. It makes her doubt her future relationships as well.

Chorus

I have questions for you
Number one, tell me who you think you are
You got some nerve trying to tear my faith apart
(I have questions for you)
Number two, why would you try and play me for a fool?
I should have never ever ever trusted you (I have questions)
Number three, why weren’t you, who you swore that you would be?

“I Have Questions” really does ask two questions in it’s chorus.

  1. Who do you think you are, trying to tear her apart and her faith for any future relationship as well?
  2. Why would he even want to try and play her for a fool? Was that his intention all along?
  3. Why did you lie? Why did you not be the person who you swore to be?

These are all rhetorical questions. She will not receive an answer from the other side and it will slowly eat her from the inside. This definitely was not a clean breakup.

Verse 2

My, my name was safest in your mouth
And why’d you have to go and spit it out?
Oh, your voice, it was the most familiar sound
But it sounds so dangerous to me now

The second verse emphasizes how close they were as a couple. He relied on her and she was there for him and he was always around, until he was fed up of her.

He broke her heart and now even his existence scares her.

Outro

How do I fix it? Can we talk? Can we communicate? Can we talk? Do I wanna fix it?
I have questions for you (I’m afraid of you)
Is it my fault? Is it my fault? Do you miss me?

The outro of “I Have Questions” show us the singer trying to fix the situation by getting back together with her ex. But she has her doubts. She questions if her is worth it. If it happened once, it could happen a second time. She is questioning her, if she was at fault for the breakup. And the saddest line would be Camila Cabello asking her ex “do you miss me?”

This is certainly a tragic ballad and Camila Cabello nailed it. When releasing the song, Camila left a note on an Instagram post that read;

“The story behind the album starts with the second song that you’ll hear called “I have questions” which I started writing in a hotel bathroom on tour a little over a year ago. i was completely broken during that time, i was in the kind of pain that’s uncomfortable to talk about, and it was the kind of chapter you never want to read out loud….

i couldn’t write another song for 6 months because writing meant i had to feel everything, and i wasn’t ready to do that yet. so when i graduated from hotel bathrooms to studios to make my first album, i was making music about everything BUT what i was going through, it was like a secret burning on my tongue and for some reason i could not get myself to say it. till one day i just could not run anymore. i pulled up the lyrics from the year before, and “I have questions” was written.” (sic)”

I guess we have some insight into the song now.
