Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Fingers”
Verse 1
The starting verse of “Fingers” talks about how the singer is hooked on to this girl. It seems as if they have had a steamy one-night affair and now his world is upside down. He wants more physical intimacy. He wants more of her beauty to love, and more of her time.
Zayn wants to soak in the real person she is. But she is hiding behind masks and social media filters. He wants her to come out of her hiding and confess what she is feeling about him.
Chorus
Deviating slightly from the first verse lyrics, Zayn is able to derive a whole other meaning. In the first verse, the singer said he had a physical relationship with this girl and now he is hooked on to her. In the starting line of the chorus of “Fingers,” Zayn says he was already messed up when he found her. He has been burnt by the fire of love and passion before. So even he is in hiding. So he wants this girl to come forth and take down his guard.
Zayn also says that if she is looking for love, let down her walls and invite him in. Maybe, two broken hearts can heal together!
Verse 2
The second verse of “Fingers” shows a situation where Zayn has lost his cool. Maybe he got tired of waiting, letting his mind wander too long and far. He has ‘accidentally’ texted this girl ‘i love you’ and now Zayn is trying to blame it on auto-correct.
We do not know what reaction she had to this message, but it could not have been positive. Else, Zayn would be singing in a whole different tone. He tried to fill his emotional void too fast-too soon with this girl and now his chances with the girl are spiralling down a wormhole.
Bridge
Zayn is trying to comprehend her situation in these lyrics. Zayn also knows that he is not the only one trying to fill her broken heart. So, his negligence on the ‘i love you’ text would have definitely spooked her off. Now it feels like a little too late for Zayn to be evaluating the consequences of his actions.
