Billie Eilish – xanny (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)
“xanny” is the 3rd track on the brand new debut album ‘WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?’ by Billie Eilish released on March 29, 2019.
The song title “xanny” is a spin on the popular recreational drug ‘Xanax’ used to treat anxiety. Hence, the song follows the theme of drug abuse and how Billie Eilish fails to find the meaning of this act. Although Billie Eilish’s aura and style would make one believe that she has a tendency towards drug usage, she denied all claims in a Tweet and explained the idea behind this song.
“I have never done drugs, I’ve never smoked anything in my life, I know people around you doing that shit makes you want to, but you don’t have to, the song’s message is less ‘don’t do drugs’; it’s more ‘be safe’. I don’t want my friends to die any more.”Billie Eilish on “xanny”
Watch the music video below which shows Billie Eilish resisting the ‘abuse’ of drugs by society on her.
In the lyrics to “xanny,” Billie Eilish questions the purpose of drug usage. She just cannot imagine what benefit these drug abusers expect out of the act. Drugs are a nuisance that eats up this world, even the youngsters. Xanax is one of many which can be easily obtainable due to its many medicinal uses. However, too much of Xanax would result in many complications–even death.
“xanny” continues to sing about Billie’s disgust towards the drugs and people who use them. She assures that she has never done drugs and still rely on a can of Coca Cola at a party to have a good time. And she hates a man who smokes, as she warns smokers to never get closer to her.
Billie Eilish spreads a very positive and important message in this song against drug use. In a pop culture where drugs and booze are encouraged and celebrated, Billie Eilish swims upstream and we love her for that.
