“Fun Tonight” is the sixth track on Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album ‘Chromatica’ released on May 29, 2020. Don’t let the title of the song deceive you because in the lyrics Gaga is saying she is not having fun! Why? Let’s find out.
Lady Gaga’s ‘Chromatica’ album was initially to be released in April but was pushed to May due to the ongoing Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic around the world. The album spawned two singles “Stupid Love” and “Rain On Me” in February and May respectively.
Lady Gaga explained the idea behind this track in an interview with Zane Lowe; “A song that means a lot to me and every time I listen to it, I get choked up because I can’t tell you how many nights that people who really loved me, trying to get me to smile, or laugh or be optimistic, and I just had no ability to be happy, it just wasn’t there. But then I would write this music and I would listen back and I’d go, ‘Why is that so fun? Why is that so happy?’”

At the beginning of the song, Lady Gaga explains her mental struggles in finding happiness in anything that she does. Many reasons could result in this psychological state that will hinder one’s ability to function normally. Hence, Gaga says that her plans are all messed up.
In the pre-chorus of the song, Gaga reveals to us that the girl in her mirror (herself, obviously) talks to her. Although this can be perceived as something positive, we do realize that it is not the case for Lady Gaga. In her song “911,” she says that her biggest enemy is herself.
It is a tragic situation when one can’t stand themself. The majority of a person’s day is spent just by their lonesome, even if you are in public. So your inner self has to be your best friend and mentor. If not, it will lead to severe psychological conflicts.
Lady Gaga says she is not having fun tonight by herself!
In the second verse, Gaga points out a few reasons why she is distant from ‘herself.’ The girl in the mirro loves the fame and the spotlight. But the real Gaga, the ordinary human being, hates it. But it is not as if she can chase this girl away. This girl is the reason why Lady Gaga is who she is today; both the positives and negatives.
However, the bigger problem Gaga faces is that music heals her soul, and at the same time music feeds this girl inside of her. The more she puts out great music, the more distaste she grows for herself. This life is a walk on a double-edged sword.
