Ed Sheeran Recorded “Galway Girl” Music Video and It’s Perfect (Lyrics Review)

Ed Sheeran’s latest album ‘Divide’ produced some uniquely different songs and “Galway Girl” stands out from the rest. The Irish themed song with Irish music and now with Irish visuals is a pleasant change of pace from today’s fancy music videos. “Galway Girl” video is simple and very attractive. A nice little fact is that it looks as if Ed Sheeran has shot the video by himself and the entire music video is in first person view. It’s pretty good.

The video is directed by Jason Koenig and shot in Galway, Ireland. So now we know Ed Sheeran had fallen in love with a girl from Ireland.

Watch “Galway Girl” Music Video

The video takes us through some Irish bars where the music is chill and the people are very hospitable-except for the last bar where Ed Sheeran gets punched in the face-twice. Most of the video we see Ed Sheeran’s girlfriend holding his hand and leading him to different places and enjoying every bit of the music and dancing.

The lyrics of the song take us through the events that unfold…

Lyrics Review & Song Meaning of “Galway Girl” by Ed Sheeran

She played the fiddle in an
Irish band
But she fell in love with an English man
Kissed her on the neck and then I took her by the hand
Said, “Baby, I just want to dance”

Fiddle is a violin and Ed has been mesmerized with her music, and she must have felt the same way about him because she fell in love with this English man from Framlingham, England. They take us through their quick-fire love story hereafter.

I met her on Grafton street right outside of the bar
She shared a cigarette with me while her brother played the guitar
She asked me what does it mean the Gaelic ink on your arm?
Said it was one of my friend’s songs do you want to drink on?

Ed’s Galway girl seems to quite the adventurous soul. She loves a smoke and a hard drink and we all know so does Ed. They love music and they love to dance. So they are kind of a perfect match in that sense.

Gaelik is a language and Ed Sheeran has a tattoo on his arm in that tongue. The meaning of the tattoo reads “When I need to get home, you’re my guiding light.” Ed says it refers to one of his friends songs and that song is “Guiding Light” by Foy Vance. He is also credited as a co-creator on “Galway Girl.”

She took Jamie as a chaser, Jack for the fun
She got Arthur on the table, with Johnny riding as shot gun
Chatted some more, one more drink at the bar
Then put Van on the jukebox, got up to dance, you know

Jamie is short for Jameson which is a very popular brand of whisky in Ireland. Jack Daniels is not an easy drink to swallow and this girl chugged it down easily. Then two more alcoholic beverages follow-Arthur Guinness beer and John Powers’ Irish Whisky.

The night turns into a haze as these two drink, chat and dance away to the music of Van Morrison-a popular artist from Ireland.

You know she beat me at darts and then she beat me at pool
And then she kissed me like there was nobody else in the room
As last orders were called, was when she stood on the stool
After dancing to Cèilidh, singing to trad tunes

This Galway girl has him shattered that she easily beat him at all the bar games even after downing so much of alcohol. She is a free spirit it seems, as she kisses Ed in the middle of the crowded bar and then gets up on a stool to dance to traditional Irish music. She is a pure Irish-bred.

I walked her home then she took me inside
Finish some Doritos and another bottle of wine
I swear I’m going to put you in a song that I write
About a Galway girl and a perfect night

It’s all about drinking through out this song and even after dropping her home after a fun filled night, they could only eat and drink more. It truly does sound like a perfect night and Ed promises the girl that he is going to put this perfect night in a song he composes. And the promise is delivered.

Makes us wonder if this was based on true events.
