Taylor Swift – London Boy (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“London Boy” is the eleventh track on the seventh studio album ‘Lover’ by Taylor Swift.

The much-anticipated 2019 album ‘Lover’ contains 18 tracks on the standard edition including three singles “ME!” featuring Brendon Urie, “You Need to Calm Down” and the title track “Lover.” The new album is in complete contrast to Taylor’s previous album ‘Reputation’ released in 2017, which focused on speaking out her mind against her haters. In this era, however, Taylor Swift is in love, and that reflects throughout the album.

“London Boy” is most likely an ode to Taylor’s current boyfriend, British actor Joe Alwyn. The 28-year-old actor was born and raised in London, United Kingdom.

The intro to “London Boy” is an extract of dialogue by Idris Elba with James Corden on The Late Late Show. Then the song moves on to a classic Pop tune with a cheery vocal track.

The first half of the first verse talks about how loving Taylor Swift is of his motherland-The United States of America. She namedrops Bruce Springsteen, the American Rock icon, the classic American blue jeans fashions, classic Tennessee whiskey, and Southern California–the classic image of what America is posed to be. But it only took a laugh, British accent and dimples on his face to make Taylor fall in love with the United Kingdom.

Taylor Swift is obviously singing about her current boyfriend Joe Alwyn in this track. However, she also has a history of dating London Boys–her ex-boyfriend was movie star Tom Hiddleston, who is also based in London. Several lovers back, Taylor Swift dated Harry Styles, who is also from London.

In the chorus of the song, Taylor confirms the ‘rumours’ of her dating Joe Alwyn. Taylor and Joe have gone to extreme lengths to keep their dating life under the radar, and it has been successful. Despite several occasional spottings since 2016, the two have barely been publicized by the media. Hence, their relationship is still on the down-low.

Taylor Swift goes on to confess her love of England by name dropping a few more British things and places–Brixton, rugby, pubs, Camden Market, high tea, West End, Highgate, Shoreditch, Hackney and so on. She is just so in love with this London Boy!
