Sabrina Carpenter – Manchild | Lyrics Review & Song Meaning

Sabrina Carpenter continues to ride the high of her ‘Short n’ Sweet’ album with her upcoming album ‘Man’s Best Friend.’ Hit songs such as “Espresso,” “Please Please Please,” and “Bad Chem” from the album propelled her career to new heights. Now she’s back with a brand new single “Manchild” which the singer equals to an eye-roll emoji in real life!

‘Man’s Best Friend’ is Sabrina Carpenter’s seventh studio album expected to be released in August 2025. The album is expected to continue diving into the ‘promiscuous Summer child’ theme from her ‘Short n’ Sweet’ album. “Manchild” is the lead single off the album and was released on June 13, 2025.

Sabrina Carpenter revealed that she wrote “Manchild” not too long after finishing ‘Short n’ Sweet’ album in 2024. The song might have drawn inspiration from Sabrina’s younger self as she recalls it being ‘confusing and fun.’ She also explained that this song is an “embodiment of a loving eye roll and it feels like a never ending road trip in the summer!”

The ‘cheeky’ music video for “Manchild” shows Sabrina Carpenter getting ditched in the middle of nowhere and hitchhiking through different stories from her wild and carefree past.

Sabrina Carpenter “Manchild” Lyrics Review and Song Meaning

From her previous album, Sabrina Carpenter coined a very popular catchphrase “Now he’s…” Continuing the tradition, she kicks off this album and the single with “oh boy.” Might not be as catchy, but equally effective.

“Manchild” lyrics revolve around the men who have kept Sabrina Carpenter on edge throughout her dating life. Excuses were the name of the game for these men who made Sabrina a less of a priority. Never able to answer a phone, wearing tacky clothes, and irresponsible were these men.

Sabrina notices this pattern among the men she dates. These are not men. They are just teenage boys. They don’t find ‘commitment’ or being responsible cool. Sabrina wonders if there’s a word for this type–stupid, slow, or useless?

She finds a cuter word–manchild.

In the hook of the song, Sabrina Carpenter wonders why these men come chasing her? Maybe she attracts this type for some reason?! All she knows is that the next one is not going to be any better and they are going to make her fed up with love.

In the second verse of the song, Sabrina questions why they appear so delicious when they are so dumb. And why is she attracted to them, too? She opts to blame how they were raised at home. Maybe they were too spoiled by their moms.

And I swear they choose me, I’m not choosing them

From one mistake to another she goes until she finds her man who can take care of her and not the other way around. Until she find that, it is going to be a fun and wild ride for her!
