We have been fans of Kanye West for several years now and this new song titled “Only One” is most definitely the most emotional song he has released. The song was released on January 1, 2015 and he is off to a great start in the new year. This is the first single off his upcoming album in 2015.
“Only One” speaks from the perspective of Donda West, late wife of Kanye West (passed away in 2007 due to a coronary artery disease, RIP), and she tells Kanye to tell North West that she is always looking at her from the heaven above. The track is beautifully versed to tell a sad story.

What makes this new song even more perfect? Listen to the organ playing in the background–that is the one and only Sir Paul McCartney. A full minute is dedicated at the end of the song for a beautiful organ solo by Sir Paul McCartney. EPIC! Besides “Only One” it is rumored that there will be more tracks from Kanye’s new album featuring the great Paul McCartney. *fingers crossed*
Let’s look closely at the lyrics of “Only One”.
The song starts off with;
As I lay me down to sleep
I hear her speak to me
Donda West hears her baby’s voice each and everyday.
I talked to God about you, he said he sent you an angel
And look at all that he gave you
You asked for one and you got two
Here Kanye West compares her daughter North and wife Kim Kardashian to angels. From the perspective of Donda, Kanye believes she would have been happy for him abut North and Kim. He seeks approval for Kim and he has been granted it.
And though I didn’t pick the day to turn the page
I know it’s not the end every time I see her face
I believe this line speaks about Donda’s death. The death was sudden and shocking as emphasized by “though I didn’t pick the day to turn the page”. Even though she has passed away she is still living in the memory of North West. Kanye West has been able to capture the horrific experience in a very creative way in “Only One”.
And next time when I look in your eyes
We’ll have wings and we’ll fly
This line speaks about the end of the line for Kanye West as well, a time when they are both reunited in the heavens. The next time they see each other will be in the heavens and they will be angels having wings to fly away!
At the end of the song Kanye repeats the following line for 9 times before Paul McCartney’s music comes;
Tell Nori about me, tell Nori about me
This line on “Only One” says that Donda wants Kanye to tell North about her. Tell all the fond memories of her and how she was the sweetest mother there was. Oh, North’s nickname is “Nori”.
To be honest I wasn’t expecting a song as emotional as this from Kanye West. But he delivered the unexpected and he delivered it good. Great start for the year and for his upcoming album.
