anne-marie ed sheeran acoustic 2002 lyrics review song meaning

Anne-Marie and Ed Sheeran’s Acoustic “2002” is Pure Bliss (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

We have seen the acoustic genius of Ed Sheeran on more than several occasions, and we know he is good. Apart from his own gorgeous tracks, Ed Sheeran has made acoustic covers for songs such as “Drunk in Love” by Beyonce and “In da Club” by 50 Cent. There really are no limits to this ginger. We know Anne-Marie is an extremely talented singer who has scored Platinum selling songs such as “Ciao Adios,” “Rockabye” and “Bad Girlfriend.” But we have had little to experience her acoustic prowess until now.

“2002” is not the first time Ed Sheeran and Anne-Marie has sat down in a small room with Ed Sheeran playing the guitar and both sung their hearts out. They did the same thing last year when they covered Anne-Maries’ hit single “Ciao Adios” acoustically. Almost exactly a year later, we get this beautiful acoustic rendition of “2002” from Anne-Marie’s 2018 album ‘Speak Your Mind.’

Both Ed Sheeran and Anne-Marie have contributed in lyrics to the song.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “2002”

“2002” is simply an adorable love song that draws memories of good times back in the year 2002. Anne-Marie said the below about the song in a Luvpop interview.

“It is all about that year, when I was that age just listening to that music that I loved at that time. You know, Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliott… All of these songs. Yeah, it just takes me back to that time.”

Verse 1

Anne-Marie starts off about this relationship she was in back in the year 2002. Maybe it was her first kiss because she remembers is quite preciously. She was 11 years old back then and their kiss felt light as a feather on her lips. But they felt as if they were in love like adults. Nothing in the world could stop them!

Somehow these lyrics feel really personal and authentic.

Pre-chorus

These lyrics set the prelude to the chorus coming up which is a throwback to some fond memories back when life was simple.

Chorus

The chorus, as mentioned before contains 6 references to some of the biggest hits from the 2000’s.

In order of appearance in “2002,” the song references in the first lyric are “Oops… I Did It Again” by Britney Spears, “99 Problems” by Jay-Z and “Bye Bye Bye” by N Sync.

The second line gives references to “The Next Episode” by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg and “Ride Wit Me” by Nelly. On the next line of the song, Anne-Marie circles back to another Britney Spears’ song “…Baby One More Time.”

The chorus of “2002” is a rush of sweet memories from the past.

Verse 2

They move past 2002 to a time when they are 18 years old. ‘Under the covers’ is an obvious reference to having sex, which she calls being ‘more than lovers.’ Even now, they reminisce back to the times that were simpler and the kisses felt like feathers.

“2002” is such a sweet description of a fond love story that has actually lasted years. We do not know if this is 100% related to Anne-Marie or Ed Sheeran’s personal experiences. But it certainly feels as if either of the artists narrated their love life here.

After this acoustic rendition, they end the song so happily and Anne-Marie hugs Ed and says “I love you.” This harmony is needed in the music industry as an example to everybody.

We absolutely love this remake of “2002” by Anne-Marie and Ed Sheeran. Their voices mix in a perfect harmony for this love song.
