Halsey has been performing her latest hit single “Without Me” in so many different stages. She performed the track during the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Again at, Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball 2018, and again at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2019. Halsey also performed a heated choreograph with a female dancer live at The Voice season 15 finale. So it comes as little wonder that “Without Me” is currently Billboard Hot 100’s #1 ranked song. In spite of this victory, Halsey released a vertical video of herself performing this song.
However, none of the above performances compare to the live act Halsey did at 2018 MTV Europe Music Award ceremony. Why do we say this? Because, Halsey was put inside a glass cage, that was getting water sprinkled inside. In addition, the singer was chained at her waist to a iron pole inside the cage. This iron chain and glass cage acts as strong metaphors to support her convey the meaning of the song to the crowd.
As we have analyzed the lyrics of “Without Me” in depth before, this song talks about pouring yourself out to help somebody be better and then getting completely ghosted afterwards. She never thought he would be able to be without someone whose shoulder he used to climb up the wall. Now that he is up there, he acts as if he had nothing to do with the singer.
The glass cage and the chain represent Halsey’s attachment to this other person. She is in disbelief of how he behaves now, and she is saddened over it. Until such time she lets go of her emotions towards this person, she will forever be bound by mental chains.
