It is always a unique feeling when two musical worlds collapse to create magic. Taylor Swift and Shawn Mendes collaborated on a brand new remix of “Lover” from Taylor’s 2019 album also titled the same. More than the song itself, we get a feeling that Taylor wanted to announce the pun ‘collaborashawn’ to the world. Get it?
‘Lover (Remix)’ adds new verses by the 21-year-old singer Shawn Mendes. He also appeared in Taylor Swift’s long-running ‘Reputation World Tour’ concerts to perform hit single “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back.” So it is not entirely surprising that these two artists got together to put a spin on the already-swooning “Lover” song.
Taylor Swift took to Twitter to announce the release of “Lover (Remix);” “There is a new version of “Lover” coming. A remix, featuring someone who I’m such a huge fan of, who I’ve known for a very long time, and someone that I’ve always really been dying to collaborate with. So drumroll, please. It is featuring Shawn Mendes. He has taken “Lover” and rewritten parts of it, which is so important because I love him as a writer and I also think that everybody would write a different love letter to their lover and I think his take on it is so beautiful. I’m so so so excited.”

Apart from the original lyrics by Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes adds a new second verse on this remix of the song. In this verse, Shawn Mendes continues with the swooning theme of the song. One important element in these lyrics is the mention of “dancing around the kitchen” in candlelight. This is a direct reference to one of Taylor’s best works “All Too Well,” in which she sings “dancing around the kitchen in the refrigerator light.”
Shawn Mendes also draws a beautiful picture of the timeline of their relationship. From the pictures of when they were young hung on the walls, to them sitting on the stoop and singing to each other at the age of eighty.
In the bridge of “Lover (Remix),” Shawn Mendes adds yet another few lyrics to blend in with Taylor’s. In these lyrics, he sings of how she can be assured of his love by merely looking into his eyes. He also brings up the infamous Titanic story to profess his love. The RMS Titanic was one of the largest passenger ships to be built 1912 which crashed on to an iceberg and sunk in North Atlantic Ocean killing over 1,500 people on board. Director James Cameron transformed this story into a movie interviewing the love story between Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet). The movie became an iconic production and a symbol of love and destruction.
