Eminem – Leaving Heaven Ft. Skylar Grey | Lyrics Review and Song Meaning

“Leaving Heaven” is the 9th track on Eminem’s 2020 album ‘Music to Be Murdered By.’ The song features vocals by Em’s longtime collaborator Skylar Grey. The song is also the first Eminem song to be produced by a female artist featuring on the song.

Eminem released his much anticipated eleventh studio album titled ‘Music to Be Murdered By’ on January 17, 2020. Although the album was heavily awaited by Stans, the release of the album was a surprise as Eminem nor any official party gave out any confirmation of the release. ‘Music to Be Murdered By’ album consists a staggering 20 tracks and is considered as a double album. The album is seemingly an address to the current status of the Rap God, addressing his friends and foes in the game. This recent surprise project follows Eminem’s 2018 surprise hit ‘Kamikaze‘ album that literally attacked every disdainful aspect in society including mumble rap.

“Leaving Heaven” is a concept by Skylar Grey’s fiance, Elliot, put into lyrics. In an Instagram Story, Skylar Grey shared; “Yo yo yo, so some facts… I’ve worked on maybe a dozen songs with Em… but this is the first time I’ve produced for him. “Leaving Heaven” was a concept Elliot came up with… Then we turned it into a hook, I made a beat, sent it to Marshall, and now here we are! (Side note… am I the first female to produce an Eminem song?)”

In the song, Eminem narrates his rough upbringing as a child which persisted through his teen years and even until now. He says that he cannot recall the number of times he has been kicked down–a rough estimate is “six thousand times.”
