Pharrell Williams – Entrepreneur Ft. Jay-Z | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

If there was a question of which music video motivates you the most to be successful, this brand new track by Pharrell Williams and Jay-Z would definitely make the top 5 cut. The new track titled “Entrepreneur” aims at empowering the African Americans having business ownerships, and overcoming the racism in industries.

Pharrell Williams talked about the inspiration behind the track with TIME magazine; “The intention for a song was all about how tough it is to be an entrepreneur in our country to begin with. Especially as someone of color, there’s a lot of systemic disadvantages and purposeful blockages. How can you get a fire started, or even the hope of an ember to start a fire, when you’re starting at disadvantages with regards to health care, education, and representation?”

The entire music video of five and half minutes is a montage of some of the leading business owners in the Black community. Entrepreneurs, owners, CEOs, founders, and initiators of color are shown in a montage reel with a description of their enterprises. If this video doesn’t motivate you, despite your color, we do not know what will.

Even artists such as Tyler, the Creator, and Jay-Z himself are mentioned on the track. California-based rapper, Tyler, the Creator’s list of achievements runs down the screen for a few seconds, from singer/songwriter to actor to producer to business owner. Jay-Z in particular is one of the most successful musical and business moguls of the African American community in The USA.

Throughout the music video are some of the most inspiring and motivating stories of Black enrichment in business out there.

One story, the last one in the video, is of special significance. We see Broadway star Robert Hartwell choreographing infront a house. The story behind the house is laid out in captions in the video. It is the house which once was a plantation where Robert’s ancestors were enslaved. Recently this house was put up for sale, $400,000, cash only. Robert Hartwell bought it!

The verses by Pharrell Williams and Jay-Z further go on to empower and motivate Blacks to rise up, against, and despite all obstacles. Do no get shoved down by the lies the media has to feed you. Open your eyes, let the “Third eye dilate,” see things beyond what everybody wants you to see, and only then you will see something beyond the veil.

The song also encourages the African Americans to support each other in their businesses. Rather than feeding multi-billion dollar industries that feed the eager and power of a biased race, why not support the booming enterprises of your own race. This shall not be interpreted as a warcry against any of the races. This song is not a call to cancel the Whites and their entreprises. It is merely a call to stand together in solidarity and support one another.
