Demi Lovato – Met Him Last Night Ft. Ariana Grande | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

“Met Him Last Night” is the ninth track on Demi Lovato’s 2021 comeback album ‘Dancing With the Devil…The Art of Starting Over.’ The song features vocals by Ariana Grande marking their first collaboration together. Thematically, this song interwines the themes of alcohol and making bad choices in relationships.

Demi Lovato announced her seventh studio album ‘Dancing With the Devil…The Art of Starting Over‘ released on April 2, 2021. This is her follow-up project to her 2017 album ‘Tell Me You Love Me.’ The album touches on her personal struggles with drug addiction and her near-fatal overdose in 2018.

Talking with Apple Music, Demi Lovato revealed how their collaboration came to be; “I remember playing ‘Dancing With the Devil’ for Ariana back in 2019 when I was at her concert in London. We were backstage and she was so excited. She’s always been super supportive of me and my career, and it’s so awesome to have a friend like her in the industry. She started writing this song and immediately thought of me, so when she gave it to me I was like, ‘We should just sing this together.”

“Met Him Last Night” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

The lyrics of the song are a beautiful symphony of red wine and white wine high and poor decision making when it comes to love. One could also argue that there was no “him” at all and that “he” was just imaginary. One could also argue that “he” is the alcohol itself.

Throughout the lyrics, both Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande sing about their regrets of falling for the wrong guy. He probably looked decent, could hold up a conversation, funny, and entered into their lives at a rather vulnerable point. The ladies were high on wine, which didn’t help with logical reasoning either.

I think I Iove him, though I know it ain’t right

A few nights of wine-induced fun and the reality starts to kick in. Why the need to call him a “devil’? Not entirely sure. Maybe the fact that he made her fall for him so easily. It was as if she under a spell by Lucifer.

However, this album by Demi Lovato is all about getting yourself dusted up and moving on. So, in the song, we hear that she wakes up from his spell and makes up her mind to move on. She sings “Watch me bounce before I give you my all.” ‘Bounce’ is slang for walking away.

However, she also sings “So, I promise tonight is the last call.” ‘Last call’ is the final round of drinks at a pub or a club before it closes down. So, we, too, relapse to the theme of alcohol as the album itself is coated with a similar theme. She might have been talking about her drinking addiction the whole time, calling it the devil. However, in the theme of relationships, the last call could be Demi’s final carnal encounter with him before she walks out of the relationship. But, Dua Lipa had the best advice for these situations; “If you’re under him, you ain’t getting over him” in her hit song “New Rules.”
