American singer-songwriter Ella Langley may have a hit on her hand with her latest release, “Choosin’ Texas.” She launched her music career in 2024 and already has a Billboard Hot 100 hit at #5 for this new song.
However, Ella Langley is no stranger to success with her debut single “You Look Like You Love Me,” released on June 21, 2024, becoming a major hit with over 3 million units sold in the US alone. The song also won her several awards, including ‘Single of the Year’ and ‘Visual Media of the Year’ awarded by the Academy of Country Music Awards.
Following the success of her debut studio album ‘Hungover,’ Ella Langley is gearing up for the release of her second studio album, still to be titled.
“Choosin’ Texas” lyrics were partially inspired by the stories from Country singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert, who is also a writer on this song. Miranda Lambert is from Texas, and her humorous and adventurous stories gave Ella the idea of a ‘Texas girl’ and how bad*ss they can be. From there on, the song supposedly was written in thirty minutes.

Ella Langley “Choosin’ Texas” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review
The beginning of the song also marks the potential end of a relationship for Ella Langley and her romantic interest. Ella Langley was raised in Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue her music career. Just when she thought she was making her partner fall in love with her, someone else came along.
Ella Langley says that she could not match the spark of this other woman that attracted her partner. There was something about her – maybe the way she talked, the way she walked, the way she handled herself – that signals men that she knows what she wants and is not afraid to go after it.
She’s from Texas, I can tell by the way
He’s two-stepping ’round the room
This woman has him enchanted. He is two-stepping, a traditional dance move, around the room, and has the biggest smile on his face. Two-stepping could mean the literal dance or the hidden meaning that he is rushing away from Ella back to his roots. Ella calls him a cowboy – a reference to the Western culture that was and is prominent in Texas. Nashville just didn’t make the cut. He was a true Texan at heart, and combining that with the fire of a Texas lady is a hard match-up for Ella.
Drinking Jack all by myself
He’s choosin’ Texas, I can tell
Ella notices that her partner is only physically present with her. In his mind, he is in Texas – in the arms of another woman. Ella can tell that he is choosing Texas over Nashville.
In the second verse of the song, Ella Langley starts to see the patterns that he was never going to be satisfied with anything but Texas. Despite the numerous artists Ella introduced him to, he always kept going back to “Amarillo by Morning,” a popular song from 1982 by George Strait. George Strait is also from Texas and an influential artist in the Country Music history.
There is so much or so little that Ella Langley can do to make him stay. Texans are a tough breed and strong-headed. They are hard to control, and this cowboy is no different. Nashville will have to wait its turn with another state.
