Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do (Lyrics Review & Song Meaning)

After a 2 years and few more months of album-deprivation, Taylor Swift has today (24/08/17) has released her brand new single “Look What You Made Me Do” from her upcoming album ‘Reputation.’

“Look What You Made Me Do” single has a whole new style which we have not seen from Taylor in any of her work before. It is fair to call this new song is swaying a lot towards ‘Grunge’ genre. It is undoubtedly a dark melody, which is in perfect sync with the snake videos she has been releasing on her Facebook page.

Lyrics to “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift

I don’t like your little games
Don’t like your tilted stage
The role you made me play
Of the fool, no, I don’t like you
I don’t like your perfect crime
How you laugh when you lie
You said the gun was mine
Isn’t cool, no, I don’t like you (oh!)

[Pre-Chorus]
But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

[Chorus]
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

[Verse 2]
I don’t like your kingdom keys
They once belonged to me
You ask me for a place to sleep
Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)
The world goes on, another day, another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure
Maybe I got mine, but you’ll all get yours

[Bridge]
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress, starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress, starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress, starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress, starring in your bad dreams
(Look what you made me do)
(Look what you made me do)
“I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now.”
“Why?”
“Oh ’cause she’s dead!”

[Chorus]
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

Lyrics Analysis & Song Meaning

Despite the catchy lyrics and dark tunes, “Look What You Made Me Do” has us worried with some lyrics.

Taylor Swift clearly says the “old Taylor is dead” which has us alarmed. The old Taylor was the sweetest artist we had in Pop and now the artist herself calls that part of her life is dead. This is in line with her deleting all of her posts from social media from all of her previous eras. Could the old Taylor Swift be really gone?

According to our perspective the entire song could be about Taylor Swift’s long running feud with Kanye West. The feud began when Taylor Swift won “Music Video of the Year” at 2009 VMAs and Kanye West interrupted her accoptance speech by saying she did not deserve the award. And Kanye has been jabbing at Taylor ever since. Kanye’s 2016 song “Famous” calls Taylor Swift a bitch whom was made famous by that stint at VMAs. The bad blood has not reduced since.

“Kingdom keys” could be a subtle way of refering to Kanye West’s “Kingdom Come” type beat which got nominated for MTV VMA award for ‘Best Hip Hop Music Video.’

“Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time…” is Taylor Swift saying that she has been attacked countless times for countless reasons over the past years and she always comes back from them. She has been attacked her for relationships, music, friends and looks. But she has always stood strong in every situation and has come out triumphant.

“Look What You Made Me Do” has Taylor Swift saying “I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me…” which is quite sad to hear. Taylor has had a rough time making friends in the industry with everyone jealous of her trust. With Katy Perry acusing Taylor of stealing her backup dancers to sabotage Katy’s world tour, Taylor hasn’t had many collaborations over the years. And the media has done the worst damage to her reputation over the years-following her everywhere and reporting and critisizing her every move. It is quite fair to hear her say that she has lost trust over the people around her by now. At times we saw Taylor Swift taking extreme measures to hide from the media.

This song marks a clear turning point in the music style of Taylor Swift. From Country to Grunge she has come a long way. We just hope that the pressures from the industry and media has not made a permanent impact on her as a person.

Taylor Swift says she will be the actress starring in your bad dreams. Basically, she is saying that she will be haunting her hater/s in their nightmares. It is clear that Taylor is talking about many of her haters in this song when she says “I’ve got a list of names,” and Kanye’s name is highlightes in red. It makes sense as feud with Kanye West is the longest standing rival to date. And the true beginning of the “snake” hate comments rose from that incident. So it makes sense that Taylor Swift posted a video of an attacking snake to symbolize the release of “Look What You Made Me Do” which is in fact a bit back at Kanye West.

Whatever her intentions were with “Look What You Made Me Do” single, Grunge music will take some getting used to. Let us hope that the rest of the album will not be as dark as this track. But there is a good chance that we will not be satisfied in that sense.

  1. I always read that it was Katy Perry who did the sabotaging (trying to hire Taylor’s people) not the other way around.
