Avicii – SOS Ft. Aloe Blacc (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

The late Swedish DJ maestro, Avicii continues to heal our souls with brand new music posthumously. “SOS” is the first single released by Avicii after his tragic passing on April 20, 2018.

Tim Bergling AKA Avicii was 28-years-old at the time of passing, and his management has announced a posthumous album titled ‘TIM’ to be released in 2019. “SOS” is the first single off of the album and features vocals by “Wake Me Up” collaborator Aloe Blacc.

Avicii’s cause of death was identified as suicide and he was known to suffer from stress and depression throughout his career. He also announced to quit touring in 2016 due to health concerns. The shocking revelation is that his song, “SOS,” does talk about his inner struggles. The entire song sounds to be a cry for help–hence the song title ‘S.O.S’ which is an internationally recognized term for help or support.

The first verse of “SOS” tells us Avicii’s problems with addiction. He mentions that he is two times clean, which on the flip side means that he fell off the wagon two times. Avicii was hospitalized twice–one of which was for heavy drinking. In the song lyrics, he mentions his modes of escapes–“a pound of weed and a bag of blow.” ‘Blow’ in slang refers to Cocaine.

The chorus of the song explains how love is the most powerful drug there is. It can either be positive or negative. But in these lyrics, Avicii refers to a love that makes him want to give up on the drugs. He refers to himself being ‘underground.’ This means that his life has gotten so low for some reasons. Her love makes him want to rise from this beat status.

In the second verse, Avicii explains the consequences of being under the influence of drugs. Lack of sleep, haunted dreams, failure of social life and so on. It is a pit of sorrow and despair. He strongly believes that the love he wishes, would help him recover.

Sad, that Avicii could not find the love he so desperately required! Cannot wait to see the rest of the songs on ‘TIM’ album coming soon.
