Tame Impala – It Might Be Time (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“It Might Be Time” is the second single off of Tame Impala’s fourth studio album ‘The Slow Rush.’ The single follows the first release by the band “Patience” since their 2015 project ‘Currents.’

‘The Slow Rush’ is Tame Impala’s highly anticipated album after an extended hiatus since 2015.

In this new track, Kevin Parker seems to be dealing with several changes. With age and growth, things that used to appear in some way tends to change. What used to be pretty may not be anymore. What used to be fun may not be anymore. It doesn’t always have to be a negative change, but everything changes; “nothing lasts forever.”

Listen to the new track below.

In the chorus of the single, Kevin talks about the realization of his own inner changes. He is not as young as he used to be. He is not as cool as he used to be and he is not likely to recover from an injury as fast as he used to do. So Kevin admits to himself that change is imminent and there is nothing wrong with that.

In the second verse, however, we can hear Kevin lamenting over the fact that he is going through changes. He is finally at a point in his life where things look bright and okay. Kevin does not want this to change. He is losing the friends he used to hang out with–they are married and occupied. It is not an easy task to endure all these changes mentally and not break.

“It Might Be Time” also takes a very depressive tone as it progresses. After the second verse, Tame Impala sings about how people he cares about are moving out of his circle. The ones who used to sneak out and have fun now roll their eyes when you drop by their front door. They don’t have time for him anymore. “We promise to come visit” is the empty promise they throw at Kevin.

Kevin admits that trying to resurrect what they had is only a ‘dream’ now; “‘Cause I just wanna keep this dream alive for now.” The singer is not at a stage where he wants everything around him to change so abruptly. He has made peace with the inner changes he goes through. But friends is something he is not ready to cope with yet.
