Tame Impala – Lost In Yesterday | Lyrics Review and Song Meaning

A brand new year and Tame Impala has a brand new single, and possibly the last from his upcoming album. The fourth single “Lost In Yesterday” is a bittersweet mixture of nostalgic emotions about the past. Let’s look at the lyrics and song meaning of this new song.

“Lost In Yesterday” is the fourth single on Tame Impala’s upcoming fourth studio album ‘The Slow Rush.’ The album has produced three single in 2019, including “Borderline,” “It Might Be Time,” and “Posthumous Forgiveness.” The album is expected to release on the Valentine’s Day of 2020.

Tame Impala sings about past experiences and how to let them go if they start to hold you back. It is equally important to hold on to good relationships and cherish them. “So if they call you, embrace them / If they hold you, erase them.”

In the chorus of the song, the singer reminisces about a relationship that failed. He wonders if it could have turned to something fruitful if they held on. He thinks back to the past, knowing that there is no good in living in the past. The past is merely a lesson to design your own future. The singer says that at some point, you have to let go of the shackles that tie you down to the past. It is inevitable. He also gives props to the major Sci-Fi/comedy movie titled “Groundhog Day,” in which a weatherman is stuck living in the same day on repeat!

In the second verse of the song, the singer realizes that he was arrogant and stupid to see his own mistakes back then. Maybe he is alluding to the same relationship that did not work out. He wonders why ‘life’ did not pan out the way he wanted it to. But who’s does?

Tame Impala also shoutouts to the children’s board game ‘Snakes and Ladders,’ in which the player has to move a number of squares on the board as he rolls the dice. If the player lands on a ‘ladder,’ he can ascend to the top of the latter. If he lands on a ‘snake,’ he has to descend to the snake’s tail. The game ends when a player reaches the top-most tile on the board. ‘Life’ in general is also quite similar to this game. There are many pitfalls AKA snakes and many opportunities AKA ladders in life. A lot will depend on your hard work and a lot will depend on your luck as well.
