Meek Mill – Letter to Nipsey Ft. Roddy Ricch | Lyrics Review and Song Meaning

Meek Mill and Roddy Ricch utilized their 2020 Grammy Awards performance slot to debut a new song. And this one is a tribute to the late rapper Nipsey Hussle who passed away on March 31, 2019, after being shot fatally. In this address to Nipsey, rappers Meek Mill and Roddy Ricch express the void that Nipsey had left within them and in the industry.

Meek Mill announced that “every cent from this song made will go to Nipsey’s family!” on Twitter after the song was premiered live. The Grammys ceremony honoured both Nipsey Hussle and NBA All-Star L.A. Lakers legend Kobe Bryant who passed away in a tragic helicopter crash.

A flock of A-list artists got together to honour Nipsey Hussle in performing this tribute song at the Grammys 2020. John Legend, DJ Khaled, Meek Mill, Kirk Franklin, Roddy Ricch, and YG donned themselves in white for this special tribute. Nipsey Hussle also won ‘Best Rap Performace’ for “Racks in the Middle” also featuring Roddy Ricch, at the 2020 Grammy Awards.

In the lyrics to the tribute track, Meek Mill goes on to say how much the loss of Nipsey Hussle felt on him. He says it hurt his heart to see the rapper laying on the floor, bleeding, after being shot multiple times in South Los Angeles. He was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital. Nipsey was 33 years of age at the time.

Meek Mill says that Nipsey was shot dead because he was becoming a positive influence on society and spreading an important message on unity and equality. Mill says that now even he is scared to write the thoughts in his head into a song because he might end up meeting the same fate.

The references to ‘marathon’ refer to Nipsey Hussle’s clothing brand ‘Marathon Clothing.’

In the chorus, Roddy Ricch explains how devastated he was to hear the news of Nipsey’s passing. Almost a year has gone and Roddy still sheds a tear when the memories of Nipsey float around his head. Roddy has no clue why Nipsey had to leave us so soon, but he is not one to question God’s plans.

In the verse performed by Roddy Ricch, he recalls hearing the news of the passing of Nipsey Hussle. He poured out tears wherever he was and had to take some serious efforts to control himself. Roddy also name drops a few famous personalities whom he claims to relate to the same feelings about Nipsey’s death.
