The song speaks about the raging love between two people in a relationship.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Close To Me”

Verse 1

Ellie Goulding speaks about her partner in this verse. She says how they are both similar in ways that they both don’t like other people and are most likely to get kicked out of a party.

Their relationship is not perfect either. Ellie confesses that both of them lie to each other. Maybe this is why Ellie goes on to call herself and her lover ‘animals’ later on in the song. Still, they are so attracted to each other that they both burn with sexual passion.

Pre-chorus

These lyrics are a plead from Ellie Goulding to her lover not to leave her side. Because their flawed ways are just too perfectly synced together. She also calls their passion more suited for the jungle, to be wild and free.

Chorus

These lyrics of “Close To Me” sing of how Ellie Goulding believes she is nothing without her animalistic counterpart. She knows that both of them are wild and free, and unsuitable for society. But they are just too perfect together. And she confesses that only him and his body makes her animal instincts light up.

Verse 2

Swae Lee jumps in on the second verse of the song to give his POV on Ellie’s confessions so far.

Swae Lee sings about his affection for this girl. He stopped all his affairs with side chicks to make room for her. He also says that ‘comfort’ lies when their bodies are entwined together.

Lee also says that he f*cks with her and not under covers. This is deriving from the popular slang that ‘f*ck with you’ stands to mean that they get along with you or put up with you very well.

‘Burning rubber’ in this context stands to mean ‘having sex with a condom on.’

Swae Lee does not forget to talk about his success. He admits that he did not go to college, but he is covered in ice AKA diamonds. He is not influenced by price tags and he uses a private jet to get by.

Lee also says that he has the spotlight now, having broken into the grand stages of hip-hop. Everything he says would have its consequences.
