Finally we have the much anticipated collaboration between Julia Michaels and Selena Gomez. The new single titled “Anxiety” perfectly sums up the mentality of a person suffering with anxiety and depression. The song acts as an eye-opener of what one goes through in such a state of mind. Weldone, Julia and Selena!!!
“Anxiety” appears in the new album ‘Inner Monologue, Pt. 1’ EP by Julia Michaels. The album released on January 25, 2019 along with 6 songs. The only other collaboration on the EP is with Niall Horan on “What a Time.”
Speaking with Beats1 Radio, Julia Michaels confessed that the song and other songs on the EP are based off of her inner feelings, hence the title ‘Inner Monologue.’
“I was writing with Scott Harris and Ian Kirkpatrick, and I basically was just like I kind of wanna talk about these sort of things that I deal with on a daily basis. Not just anxiety, but the fear of missing out and sort of wanting to do things but never actually having the ability to go through with anything that you want to do. It’s just a way into the mind of someone that has anxiety and has these struggles for someone that doesn’t understand it.”Julia Michaels/Beats1
Listen to “Anxiety” by Julia Michaels and Selena Gomez
The entire song bases off on spreading awareness of what one goes through fighting anxiety and depression. It is one thing for such a person to deal with their inner struggles, but they have to deal with the outside world as well. No matter how much she tries to explain her state to her friends, they don’t quite understand.
Julia Michaels is sidelined from the society because of her anxiety. She prefers not to go the movies with her friends. She hopes the plans she makes with her friends get cancelled. And worst part is, when she tries to make up her mind to fight her mental state, anxiety kicks back in quite devastatingly.
Selena Gomez’s verse on the song is quite powerful as well. It relates to someone battling anxiety and depression, who is unable to become the spotlight within a crowd even if their life depended on it. A crowd usually puts their hands up for a motivating, cheerful and good cause. However, the only reasons Julia and Selena can chant are being sad, hating others and being scared! Doubt anyone will put their hands up to these feelings!
The Internet is full of resources on anxiety and depression and no one should feel ashamed or bad about getting help. For starters, WebMD has a lot of reading material on the causes, symptoms and possible treatments for these mental statuses. Talk to your friends, talk to your parents or spouse and get help.
As much as anxiety is a mental state, so is everyone else’s to cope and help the ones suffering from it. Love, understanding and compassion can take all of us a long way.
