Analysis of Rolling Stone’s ‘The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time’ List

When it comes to the ‘greatest songs’ and ‘best songs’ of all time, there are countless lists and rankings out there on the Internet. So why does Rolling Stone’s list take the lead among the rest of the rankings? For one, Rolling Stone is one of the most reputed magazines on music there ever was and ever will be. The influence the magazine had on the music community is unmatchable. Also, looking at their list, it is evident that there has been a lot of research that has gone into compiling this list. Rolling Stone magazine has considered the impact each song had had on the pop-culture, the dynamics of music, versatility of lyrics, songs’ commercial success, charting success, and so on. So, it is not inaccurate to title Rolling Stone’s list on ‘The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time’ as the definitive list of the best songs out there.

Rolling Stone magazine issued a special collectors issue in December 2004. This was an immediate follow-up to their coveted list ‘The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time’ published in 2003.

The songs list underwent an update in 2010 and 26 new songs were added to the list. The new additions were all songs from the 2000s except for “Juicy” by The Notorious B.I.G. (ranked at #424). The top 25 songs remained unchanged.
