Dua Lipa – Future Nostalgia (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

Dua Lipa’s brand new single release, “Future Nostalgia” on December 13, 2019, may have not bee a surprise to the fans. But the kind of music the song carried is definitely a surprise. But then again, a track talking about ‘future’ cannot have drums and flutes. Let us dig into the meaning of this new song by Dua Lipa.

Dua Lipa announced her upcoming second studio album ‘Future Nostalgia,’ through a tattoo on her arm on December 1, 2019. While the album’s first single “Don’t Start Now,” is classic Dua Lipa, this new title track is nothing like her at all. But not in a bad way.

In a press release, Dua Lipa said that she wishes to break her boundaries of music; “What I wanted to do with this album was to break out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to make music that felt like it could sit alongside some of my favorite classic pop songs, whilst still feeling fresh and uniquely mine.” And “Future Nostalgia” promotional single is the first taste of that. Listen to the audio below.

Lyrics Review and Song Meaning of “Future Nostalgia”

The techno-drive track speaks about Dua Lipa’s attempt at changing the game in music. This song is her first attempt on the path.

Verse 1

In the first verse, Dua Lipa sings about her intentions in the music game. Fans want songs that resonate through time. However, in modern Pop culture, such songs are a rarity. Dua Lipa’s focus is on something else. She wants to change the game. In doing so, her name and music will live on forever.

Dua Lipa compares herself to the likes of the popular architect John Lautner. He is a well regarded modern-day architect known for his contemporary designs. Lautner was a pioneer in the ‘less is more’ school of thinking when it comes to building and interior designs.

In the latter part of the verse, Dua gives a shout out to the producer of the track Jeff Bhasker and her own upcoming album titled ‘Future Nostalgia.’

Chorus

These lyrics are an ado to Dua herself. Why not? Within a very short span in her career, Dua Lipa has achieved to make an international name for herself. In 2019 she won two Grammy awards for ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Dance Recording’ for “Electricity.”

She says that it is okay to wonder about the recipe for her success. Most of her songs have charted well all over the world, and have earned a massive fan base. But with this new song and album, she is about to change the recipe. Let’s see if the world takes to her new sound.

Post-chorus

These lyrics are an empowering statement about believing in yourself and not deviating from one’s targets. She states that the journey thus fas has been an alone ride and she does not mind it. She will cruise to her targets all by herself if it is what it takes.

Dua Lipa uses an interesting phrase to define herself–a ‘female alpha.’ The two words almost don’t sound right together since we are not at all used to such a phrase. The word ‘alpha’ stands to mean strong, powerful and dominant. The word is usually associated with male figures–an ‘alpha male’ sounds like the more natural flow. Just as much as we are not used to the two words being used together, society is also not used to alpha females. But throughout her career, Dua Lipa has assumed the role of an alpha female through her personality, music and lyrics. “New Rules” is a classic example. The first single of the song, “Don’t Start Now,” is another example.

Verse 2

The second verse of “Future Nostalgia” kicks off with an ado to rolling stone–be it the popular idiom or the song “Like a Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan. Either way, Dua Lipa means to say that a person who does a lot of wandering gains no gravity of the world around them.

Being in a glass house is a reference to living ignorantly. Everything that they see is blocked or filtered by the glass surrounding them. They are not living in reality. Dua Lipa alludes that no one became great by surrounding themselves in glass walls.
