Halsey – Experiment on Me (Birds of Prey OST) | Lyrics Review and Song Meaning

Halsey called this song the “craziest” on her arsenal and that is saying something. As part of the infamous ‘Birds of Prey’ soundtrack, the song has to be a little cuckoo to qualify. Let us take a look at the lyrics and song meaning below.

‘Birds of Prey’ movie soundtrack revealed several ‘crazy’ tracks before from artists such as Meghan Thee Stallion (“Diamonds“), Doja Cat (“Boss B*tch“), Lauren Jauregui (“Invisible Chains”) and more. Almost all tracks dedicate to the craziness that is Harley Quinn–the main protagonist of the movie ‘Birds of Prey.’

Halsey had a few words to say about the track on Twitter; “Experiment on Me!!!! For the birds of prey soundtrack. Hands down craziest song I’ve ever recorded. By a landslide. And rightfully so for Harley!!!!!”

Listen to “Experiment On Me” by Halsey

The entire song is an ode to the nature of the character of Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie in the movie. The lyrics convince us that she is a force to be reckoned with a crazy to be unmatched.

Verse 1

In the first verse of the song Halsey assumes the role of Harley Quinn and invites everyone to come to try her. She is good looks on the outside and killer machine on the inside.

Chorus

There is nothing “pretty” about a car crash for a sane person. So when Harley says her beauty is equal to that of a car crash, we know that she sees the world in a whole different manner. And in her broken paradise, she is a beauty. Similarly, a mother’s “lullaby” is the most beautiful and loving thing in the world. However, Harley compares this to her dark side.

Verse 2

In the second verse of “Experiment On Me,” Halsey admits that Harley Quinn is never a good example for the kids to look up to. She does not recommend that anyone do.

Harley also admits that she is lonely in this world without a lover. Maybe this is why this open invitation goes out to come to try her. She also puts a spin on the common phrase “hopeless romantic” and admits that she is a romantic but hopeless in the cause.

Bridge

On the bridge of the song, there is a subliminal message that Harley Quinn might be a lesbian or at least a bisexual. ‘X’ and ‘Y’ refer to chromosomes that define gender in a human being. Females have two X chromosomes and males have an ‘XY’ chromosome. In the lyrics of the song, Halsey suggests that she does not need a Y with so many X’s around.

A rightful tribute to Harley Quinn indeed!
