Selena Gomez is back with some new music and this one will help out a lot of her fans. The new song, titled “My Mind & Me” gives us an insider look into her headspace and how she has been coping with her life in the past few years.
“My Mind & Me” song comes along with the documentary of the same name by Selena Gomez. The documentary was released exclusively on Apple TV and focuses on Selena’s personal life during the past six years. Ever since getting diagnosed with lupus in 2014, Selena Gomez has had battles with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder that have landed the singer in treatment facilities during these times. She has also been open about her struggles in interviews and her own songs. However, “My Mind & Me” is the most open she has been on a track so far.
In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Selena Gomez talked about the inspiration behind the song and the documentary; “I’m going to be very open with everybody about this: I’ve been to four treatment centers. I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad.” In the same interview, Gomez also admits that even suicide was on her mind for a few years although she never attempted it.

Selena Gomez “My Mind & Me” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review
Your mind is a powerful thing. But great power used in the wrong direction does a lot of harm as well. This is why it is important for you to take care of yourself, love yourself, and respect yourself. How you treat yourself will reflect in how you are taken care of.
In the lyrics to “My Mind & Me,” Selena Gomez admits to feeling like a ‘mistake’ on this planet. Sometimes she does not know her purpose in life–all the fame and money in this world and still she could not shelter herself from heartbreak, personal attacks, privacy, and physical health. She is a star of the biggest magnitude and there were still things that she could not achieve.
Selena Gomez has been in the limelight since she was a child. She is a singer, actress, producer, and everything else in the entertainment industry. Millions of people would have enjoyed her songs and shows. But when the lights go off, she has no one to tell that her legs hurt from performing all day.
Selena brings in an interesting metaphor to describe her entire celebrity life–a vehicle accident. Almost everyone passing by slows down to get a good view, but no one really stops to check on the passengers who met with the accident.
The hook of the song is dark but positive. Selena admits that sometimes her mind and herself are not on good terms. These times it becomes hard to see what’s real and harder to control herself. But would she have done things differently if she had a second chance? Probably not. And all these pitfalls come naturally to almost all celebrities. At least now she can use her massive platform to help some people who go through the same thing she does.
In the second verse of the song, Selena tells us that she hasn’t really opened up about her struggles to anyone knowing that it would just add to whatever the issues they are going through. Everyone has problems they are dealing with in some capacity. However, with this documentary and the song, Selena hopes that someone listening can at least feel like they are not alone in their struggles. Behind the multi-million-dollar empire Selena Gomez has built in the entertainment industry, she goes through the same human conditions that we all do.
