The 48-year-old music veteran Missy Elliott stunned the audience at the 36th annual MTV Video Music Awards held on August 26, 2019.
The veteran rapper from Virginia performed some of her most iconic works from the ’90s which made her a legendary name in Hip Hop and rap. Missy Elliott has won five Grammy awards and has sold over 30 million records in her career span of two decades, making her one of the best-selling female artists of all time.
Among the youthful and energetic performances of Taylor Swift, Lil Nas X, Miley Cyrus, and Normani, Missy Elliot’s performance was something out of the ordinary at the VMAs 2019. She channelled the same energy and impact that she portrayed decades ago in her vibrant tracks and music videos.
Missy Elliott’s VMAs 2019 set included a medley of some of her most iconic works such as “The Rain,” “Hot Boyz,” “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” “Pass That Dutch,” and “Lose Control.” However, she did open the medley with her latest 2019 single “Throw It Back” from her upcoming EP ‘Iconology.’
Another fun twist during the performance was the reunion of Alyson Stoner with Missy Elliot 17 years after her appearance in the “Work It” original music video. Alyson Stoner recreated her dance routine from the original track at the VMAs 2019 stage, solo.
Missy Elliott was especially honoured with the ‘Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award’ for her years of service and contribution to the musical landscape.
