The 2019 Year in Lyrics: Top Artists, Songs & Albums

At the closure of each year, it is traditional to look at the next year. But it is also equally important and fun to look back at the year spent. Genius.com is one of the premier blogs that bring lyrics of almost all the songs from all over the world to you. They publish their annual ‘Year In Lyrics’ pictographs to summarize the past year. Let’s take a look at how we, the fans, were interested in lyrics, songs and albums over the year 2019.

It is not a surprising fact that the year 2019 was dominated by female artists. From Ariana Grande to Billie Eilish to Halsey to Dua Lipa to Taylor Swift, the female singers had chart-topping success throughout the year.

Ariana Grande had the most successful period of her music career, releasing her breakup album ‘thank u, next’ in February 2019. She dominates all three charts; Top Songs with “7 rings,” Top Albums with ‘thank u, next’ and Top Artist for 2019. Grande as an artist had close to 27 million hits on Genius, while her hit single “7 rings” raked up over 6.5 million views on lyrics. Her album page for ‘thank u, next‘ accumulated over 1.4 million views over the last year.

However, it is not only the artists who were active in 2019 that managed to sneak into these top charts in lyrics. Eminem ranks at the 4th spot in Top Artists chart without having released an album since his 2018 ‘Kamikaze.’ However, he was actively involved in highly publicized feuds with Machine Gun Kelly in 2018 and Nick Cannon in 2019.

Jahseh Onfroy AKA X, is ranked at 3rd on Top Artists chart, courtesy of his two posthumous albums ‘SKINS‘ (2018) and ‘Bad Vibes Forever’ (2019).

Lil Nas X managed to strike gold with his debut release “Old Town Road (Remix)” with Billy Ray Cyrus as the song went viral all over the world. His album ‘7’ ranks at #2 on Top Albums and his breakout hit is also ranked at #2 on Top Songs list with over 1 million and 6.5 million views on Genius respectively.

The Top Albums chart, is too, dominated by female artists from Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Camila Cabello, and Lana Del Rey. All the albums on this list were released less than two years back except one odd duck sitting at #18 on the list, titled ‘A Night At The Opera’ by Queen. This album was released in 1975, and contained the epic ballad ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ and other hits such as “Love of My Life” and “You’re My Best Friend.”
